- 5 Ways to Speed Up the Hiring Process
As a hiring manager and now the Managing Partner of a Payments recruitment firm it is my belief that efficiency is paramount is the hiring process. Delayed hiring can cost companies valuable talent and hinder growth. As a hiring manager, you want to streamline the hiring process efficiently to secure the top candidates for your team. Here are five effective ways to expedite the hiring process without compromising quality. 1. Define Clear Job Requirements Upfront Clarity is key to accelerating the hiring timeline. Before even posting a job opening, take the time to define the role's responsibilities, required skills, and qualifications. By having a clear understanding of what you need, you can ensure that the recruitment process is focused and targeted. This upfront investment in defining job requirements will help attract candidates who are the right fit, reducing the time spent sifting through irrelevant applications. 2. Utilize Technology and Automation Tools Embracing technology can significantly expedite the hiring process. Leveraging applicant tracking systems (ATS), video interviewing platforms, and AI-based resume screening tools can help you efficiently manage a large volume of applicants. These tools automate repetitive tasks, such as resume screening and scheduling interviews, allowing recruiters to focus on engaging with top candidates and making faster hiring decisions. 3. Implement a Streamlined Interview Process Streamlining the interview process is critical to speeding up hiring. Consider conducting panel interviews to gather input from multiple team members simultaneously. Additionally, consolidating multiple rounds of interviews into a single day or utilizing video interviews can help condense the timeline. By making the interview process more efficient, you can provide a positive candidate experience while accelerating the overall hiring process. 4. Promote Internal Referrals and Talent Pools Don't overlook the power of internal referrals and talent pools in expediting hiring. Encourage employees to refer qualified candidates for open positions within the company. Internal referrals tend to have a shorter recruitment cycle as they are often pre-vetted and aligned with the company culture. Similarly, maintaining a talent pool of potential candidates who have previously shown interest in your organization enables quick access to a pool of qualified talent when new opportunities arise. 5. Offer Competitive Salaries and Expedite Offer Process Competitive salaries play a significant role in expediting the hiring process. Conduct market research to ensure that your salary offerings are in line with industry standards to attract top talent quickly. Moreover, once you identify the ideal candidate, expedite the offer process to prevent them from entertaining other job offers. A swift and transparent offer process demonstrates your organization's efficiency and commitment to hiring top talent promptly. By implementing these five strategies, you can streamline the hiring process, secure top talent efficiently, and drive organizational growth. Embrace these methods to optimize your recruitment efforts and build a high-performing team that propels your business forward. - "7 Mistakes Hiring Managers Should Avoid: Insights from a Payments Recruiter"
In the competitive realm of payments and fintech recruitment, hiring managers play a crucial role in shaping a company’s success by selecting the right talent. However, despite their experience and expertise, many hiring managers fall into common pitfalls that may hinder the hiring process and lead to missed opportunities. Whether you are a seasoned professional in the field or a newbie navigating the complexities of recruitment, understanding these common mistakes can help you in avoiding them and making informed decisions when it comes to hiring the best candidates. 1. Relying Solely on Resumes Resumes are undoubtedly essential, but solely relying on them can be a mistake. They only provide a glimpse of a candidate's skills and experience. It's crucial for a hiring manager to delve deeper into a candidate's background through interviews, skill assessments, and references. 2. Neglecting Cultural Fit Culture fit is as important as skills fit when hiring a candidate. Neglecting to assess how well a candidate aligns with the company's values and culture can lead to conflicts and decreased team morale in the long run. 3. Rushing the Hiring Process In a fast-paced business environment, rushing through the hiring process might seem like a solution to fill vacancies quickly. However, this can result in hiring the wrong person for the job. Take the time to evaluate each candidate thoroughly to ensure the best fit. 4. Overlooking Soft Skills While technical skills are imperative, soft skills such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities are equally crucial. Overlooking these qualities in candidates could result in a team that lacks cohesion or struggles with collaboration. 5. Ignoring Employer Branding Employer branding plays a significant role in attracting top talent. Ignoring or neglecting your company's reputation as an employer can deter potential candidates from applying. Ensure that your online presence and reviews reflect a positive image for prospective employees. 6. Focusing Too Much on Experience While relevant experience is essential, focusing too much on it can exclude talented individuals who are capable of learning and bringing fresh perspectives to the table. Consider a candidate's potential for growth alongside their past experiences. 7. Lack of Communication Maintaining open and transparent communication with candidates throughout the hiring process is key. Lack of communication can lead to candidate dissatisfaction and give off a negative impression of your company. In conclusion, being aware of these common mistakes can help hiring managers refine their recruitment strategies and make well-informed decisions when selecting the best talent for their teams. By avoiding these pitfalls and embracing a holistic approach to the hiring process, professionals can enhance their recruitment efforts and build high-performing teams that drive success. It's time to elevate your hiring game and set a benchmark for excellence in talent acquisition! - "Crafting a SMART Resume: How to Showcase Your Skills and Experience Effectively"
As a recruiter specializing in Payments and fintech, I frequently encounter resumes that fail to effectively showcase the candidate's achievements in a manner that resonates with and enlightens the reader. Typically, a hiring manager or recruiter allocates less than 30 seconds to assess a resume and determine whether to proceed with the candidate. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure that your resume adheres to the SMART criteria: Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Relevant, Timely. Specific: Can the reader clearly discern the nature of the accomplishment, award, or task? Measurable: How was the outcome quantified, whether in percentages, KPIs, growth metrics, etc.? Actionable: What steps did you personally take to drive this achievement? Relevant: Do your achievements and statements align with the requirements of the position? Timely: What was the timeframe within which a goal, accomplishment, award, or task was achieved? Your resume serves as the pivotal initial phase in securing your next career-defining opportunity; therefore, ensure it does not get relegated to the rejection pile due to vague, nondescript accomplishments and statements. Be assertive, proud, and SMART in crafting your resume, as it will significantly impact this crucial first stride towards pursuing your next career milestone. - Tips for working with a recruiter
As a former payments executive and now as a fintech and payments recruiter I wanted to share some tips for working with a specialized industry recruiter. A recruiter that is focused on a specific business segment can help open doors, provide advice on your resume, and coach you on what works and doesn't work during interviews. Here are some tips for creating a successful working partnership with a recruiter. Have a current resume. Professional recruiters will want to see your resume when meeting with you. Be proactive and make sure your resume is up to date including accomplishments and results before contacting or working with recruiters. Interview recruiters. When a recruiter contacts you, take the time to discuss their qualifications, industry knowledge and tenure to ensure you feel good about working with them. If you have any hesitation, get clear on why, as it might be an indication that the recruiter or job opportunity is not a fit for you. Treat a recruiter like a hiring manager. Interact with recruiters the same way you would a hiring manager. Your communication with a recruiter is an indication of how you will represent yourself to a hiring manager, and you want that impression to be positive and professional. Follow through with commitments. When working with recruiters, the recruiter needs to be able to trust your commitment to show up. If a recruiter has scheduled a meeting with you or an interview with a client, follow through. It reflects poorly not only on yourself but also on the recruiter if you don't. Be open about working with other recruiters. Recruiters appreciate honesty on all fronts, from your work experience to whether or not you are working with other recruiters. They understand that you're in the market to get a job and that you'll likely have other job opportunities under consideration. Offer referrals. Businesses thrive on referrals, and third party recruiters operate very much like a business. Offering qualified referrals to a recruiter will put you in their good graces and at the top of their list for future job openings for which you are qualified. Recruiters are valuable resources. Working with recruiters that specialize in your vertical can help you navigate it, from identifying employers and helping you prepare for the interview to negotiating salary. Put these tips to use to create a partnership that will help you land your next job. - Are job postings and job descriptions different?
As someone with experience as a payments executive and currently as a fintech recruiter, I can affirm that job postings and job descriptions have distinct purposes. A job posting acts as an advertisement, highlighting the benefits of the company and the role to entice the reader. On the other hand, a job description provides detailed information about the responsibilities and qualifications required for the position. Best practice dictates that a job description should begin with the internal position title, the company's mission, and detailed information on the responsibilities and requirements of the position. An effective job description avoids generic bullet points, instead providing specific details about the requirements that assist candidates and clients in determining the suitability of the position. Once the job description is finalized, crafting a job posting that effectively sells the position becomes straightforward. A compelling job posting includes a company statement that conveys passion for the mission and offers insights into the company's value proposition, highlighting aspects such as years in operation, market leadership, or innovative solutions. It should also list responsibilities and requirements, with the top three or four presented as bullet points. Finally, always include details on compensation ranges, benefits, and work location—whether it's in-office, remote, or a hybrid arrangement. Crafting a compelling job posting and a clear job description can enhance the candidate pipeline and streamline the assessment process, leading to better time-to-hire rates. - Payments and Fintech Activity Interviewing
As a past payments executive and now as a specialized payments and fintech recruiter, incorporating performance activity-based interviewing will drive more effective interviews. The traditional interviewing process of validating candidate accomplishments against position requirements and alignment of values with company culture are core to determining candidate fit, however it is also important to leverage activity-based interviewing as part of the interview process to ensure a great hire. At its core, activity-based interviewing starts with distilling the work events, tasks and activities that drive high performing outcomes. Over the years as a payments leader building high performing teams and now as a fintech recruiter I have always challenged my hiring managers and clients to adopt this additional interviewing element to help drive better hiring outcomes. For a sales role it could be presentation events achieved in the progression of the sales cycle, for customer service tickets resolved based on metrics, for product, road maps and GTM outcomes, bottom-line every position has events, activities and tasks that drive results. Taking the time to identify these performance related activities that are unique to your position requirements and evaluating candidate alignment with these activities will have an impact on fit assessment and help insure a great hire. - A Recruiters Payments and Fintech Hiring Tips
As you begin to face the challenges and opportunities for this new year, I just wanted to share some hiring tips and observations on the current Payments and Fintech talent market based on my 20+ years as a fintech executive and now as a payments and fintech recruiter…. I believe talent acquisition strategies for 2024 will be driven by this one trend: Finding great payments and fintech talent will become easier …. recruiting great payments and fintech talent will become more difficult. Here are 10 hiring tips employers can do to successfully recruit top payments talent in 2024: Treat each potential candidate like a customer. If you don’t, they will “shop” somewhere else. Make sure everyone in the interviewing process is on the same page. They must know company’s career value proposition and how to sell it to the candidate. Increase hiring speed. You can’t afford a long, drawn-out process that disappoints the candidate and allows the competition to gain a foothold. Establish a hiring team, with an execution accountability plan and track time to hire. Make payments and fintech job descriptions accurate, fun and exciting. Dull and poorly written job profiles reflect negatively on your brand and will turn-off most candidates. Make job descriptions sell! De-emphasize resumes and accept online profiles. Many passive payments candidates don’t have updated resumes. Using online profiles in the beginning will at least allow you to engage with the candidate, start the process and save time. Learn how to interview for and evaluate “soft skills”. Interpersonal communication, teamwork, problem-solving, adaptability and leadership are all examples of soft skills that will help the hiring manager predict cultural fit and future performance. Company culture, values, and career growth are becoming very important to candidates. Don’t forget to incorporate these into the interview process and employer branding messages. Be prepared to offer comp packages that exceed expectations. Be creative, take into consideration payments and fintech industry trends like time to market, product maturity and current industry compensation levels. Never stop recruiting. Keep the candidate pipeline full and great payments talent engaged even when you are not hiring. Team-up with a 3rd party recruiting firm. Find a specialized payments recruiting firm like Group W Partners with “veteran payments industry headhunters” who understand your business and industry, have credibility with potential candidates and know how to sell your opportunity! Good luck in the new year. Please don’t hesitate to call if we can ever be of assistance with your talent needs. - Contingency Recruiting Pros & Cons
Successful payments and fintech companies face the constant challenge of finding and attracting top talent to drive their success. To address this challenge, contingency recruiting may be an option for your payments or fintech organization. The contingency recruiting model leverages external recruiters to find suitable candidates for job openings, with payment contingent upon successful placement. As compared to other types of talent acquisition strategies, contingency recruiting is a popular choice for emerging and mid-market payments and fintech organizations because it requires a low up-front investment and limited time commitment on behalf of the business. While this approach offers cost and resource advantages, it also comes with some disadvantages. Let’s explore some of the pros and cons of contingency recruiting. Pros of Contingency Recruiting The placement fee of 20 to 25% of the first year’s salary is only paid when a candidate is successfully hired, reducing financial risk. Payments & Fintech contingency recruiters have more extensive talent pools and access candidates who might not be actively searching for jobs on job boards or company websites. Contingency recruitment does not require long-term contracts, or any guarantee of on-going compensation is required or expected from the company. Third party contingency recruiters are compensated based on finding suitable candidates quickly, often resulting in a faster hiring process. Hyper focused contingency recruiters like Group W Partners specialize in the payments and fintech industries providing a deep understanding of the skills and qualifications needed resulting in more successful hires. Cons of Contingency Recruiting Due to the impact of the pay for results business model the potential uncompensated costs for contingency recruiters drives a quantity of less vetted candidates, superseding candidate quality. Contingency recruiters can’t guarantee that a successful placement will occur, the hiring evaluation and final decision is the responsibility of the hiring team. The contingency recruiter is not compensated for administrative and reporting tasks limiting insight into activity, results, and weekly reviews. Candidates are not exclusive to any client company and can be presented to multiple clients in order to maximize the chance of earning placement fee. The pay for results pressure to fill positions quickly can lead to suboptimal candidate matches as compared to a fee based or outsourced recruitment model focused on a partnership driven approach. The evaluation to use contingency recruiting should align with your company's specific hiring needs, position level, and priorities. Many organizations strike a balance between contingency recruiting, contained recruiting and RPO recruitment methods to find the best candidates based on the position requirements. As part of your careful consideration of the pros and cons, give Group W Partners a call to discuss and help you make an informed choice that leads to successful hires and long-term organizational success. Founded in 1999 Group W Partners is a team of payments industry executives connecting top payments talent with emerging, mid and F500 payments and fintech organizations.
